Homeschooling and Learning Styles

Sep 23rd, 2009 | By Jessica Parnell | Category: Featured Articles

I talk about the importance of  teaching to a child’s learning style all the time.  That it is one of the greatest advantages to homeschooling; that it makes all of the difference when a child is struggling with a specific concept; that the inability to do so is one of the reasons why our public schools are failing so miserably.

Homeschooling and Writing

The Power of Dictation
Homeschool Writing Success
I had a conversation with a homeschooling friend this week whose sixth grade daughter is struggling with writing. “She is so unfocused when it comes to writing elements of our homeschooling that we end up stretching out our day into the evening or weekend just to get it done.”

President Obama’s Address to School Students Making Waves in Homeschool Circles

Sep 6th, 2009 | By Jessica Parnell | Category: News

Even Homeschool Circles are debating the issue of the president’s address to school students.

It is sad and distressing when we as a country have to be concerned about just what our president might say to our children if we gave him permission to address them through our schools.

Sep 1st, 2009 | By Jessica Parnell | Category: Lead Article, New to Homeschooling

A reader recently asked me how to handle acting as both mother and teacher.  How do you wear both hats?  How do you switch back and forth between both roles?

My answer: you don’t.

New Hampshire Homeschooler Ordered to Public School

Homeschoolers, please be aware that our freedoms are at risk.  I know there are those who disagree with me; in fact, many get very frustrated with me when I speak this way.  But here is another case where a homeschooling mother lost her RIGHT to homeschool because a judge decided that the child’s “religious beliefs are a bit too sincerely held and must be sifted, tested by, and mixed among other worldviews . . .”

Homeschooling and Certification

Aug 23rd, 2009 | By Jessica Parnell | Category: Issues in Homeschooling, Lead Article

I am often frustrated by the question, “But are you a certified teacher?”  I happen to be one, but I don’t believe it has any impact on my ability to teach my own kids.  Do I use any of what I learned while I worked towards certification?  Perhaps.  But more likely I use techniques and ideas I developed or improved upon while I was in the classroom.

Aug 17th, 2009 | By Jessica Parnell | Category: Curriculum Reviews, Math and Science

Math is one of those subjects that seems to get a lot of attention. In my experience, parents are concerned for one of three reasons:

  • Math is a struggle for my child. I just don’t know how to find the right homeschool math curriculum that will help him or her understand.
  • My child is very strong in Math–how quickly to I move him or her to an advanced homeschool math program?

Encouragement for Homeschoolers

Aug 4th, 2009 | By Jessica Parnell | Category: Featured Articles, Issues in Homeschooling

I heard a great quote the other day that cannot go unrecognized:

“Don’t lay down in the cemetary until you have to”

This was a passing comment made jokingly by my brother when his son’s game of catch went a little too close to the cemetary border (he had tripped and fallen as he reached for the ball).

Top Ten Ways to Homeschool on the Road

Our Homeschool Road Trip was a mix of fun, learning, and the beauty of God’s creation.  Many of my readers have asked how we filled the drive time.  Well, for some of the time, we worked on specific subjects but for most of the time we found ways to take the basics and turn them into a game.  This not only helped to pass the time, but brought out the creativity in all of us.
